Lavender essential oil is perhaps the most popular and frequently used aromatherapy oil, it has a light and fresh floral aroma. It is a calming, soothing and overall balancing oil. One of the most important properties of the lavender essential oil is its ability to help harmonize the mind, the body and soul and to facilitate the healing process.
Lavender oil acts as an analgesic, antiseptic and antibiotic, thus it is suitable for the treatment of colds, cough, sinusitis and flu. To relieve a tickling cough, apply a few drops of pure lavender essential oil to the throat area. This oil softens the central nervous system’s response to pain, reduces inflammation and boosts the immunity. Temple massage with lavender oil relieves headaches (mix 1 or 2 drops with a basic oil or a rich cream). One of the most important uses of the lavender oil is alleviating muscle pain of various origin. It is best used for a massage on its own or in combination with other oils (e.g. a mixture with rosemary essential oil).
The oil destroys viruses and prevents virus replication, it can be used for decontaminating premises. A quite saturated oil and water solution may be used for cleaning the furniture and item surfaces, though it is best to spread essential oils in the air using an essential oil diffuser.
Lavender essential oil is a perfect choice for people suffering from insomnia, whether it is caused by a physical ailment, mental stress or excessive brain activity, and is particularly suitable for steaming before bedtime. Effective results can be achieved by applying a few drops of the lavender oil on a handkerchief, a pillow or pyjamas, 1 or 2 drops are enough for kids.
This essential oil is very helpful in treating various ailments of infancy: intestinal pain, irritability and paediatric infections. Please note that essential oils should always be well diluted. A bath with a single drop of the essential oil will help to put a tantrum-prone baby to sleep. First dilute the essential oil with a small amount of almond oil.
Emollient, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties of the lavender oil have a positive effect in case of most skin diseases. Its excellent and popular aroma make the oil very suitable for creams, lotions, skin toners, etc. (blend it into a cream, a face cleanser or a toner – use 1 or 2 drops of the essential oil for a disposable 5 ml container filled with a cosmetic product). Lavender oil is one of the best oils for treating acne, it is also helpful for treating eczema.
The oil can serve as an insect repellent – it repels flies and mosquitoes. Applying lavender oil on your skin will prevent mosquito, midge and other insect bites and if you have already been bitten immediately apply a bit of essential oil to the bite area to soothe it and stop the itch.
